Kevin’s expression became grim. Jesse was startled by it, so different was that look from what he’d expected.

Anger, yes. Fear for Nikki, sure. But Kevin’s features were dark and severe. Almost dangerous.

“I do have a concussion,” he told Jesse. “A mild one. And you’re not listening, bro. Maybe you don’t want to. I understand that. Tell me this much. If I thought I could find her, would you come with me? Would you help?”

“The cops—”

“Will think I’m crazy. And couldn’t find her anyway.”

Jesse opened his mouth to speak, but only let out a short breath. After a moment, he nodded.

“Of course I’d come with you, you stupid shit,” he said, almost embarrassed by the sentiment. “What the hell do you even ask for?”

Suddenly energized, Kevin sat up in bed. As he moved, Jesse noticed the blood on his sheets for the first time. It was upsetting. Too real. His assurances up until that point had been mainly bluster. Not that he wouldn’t have gathered up a bunch of people to kick the crap out of Pete Starling, but he didn’t have the first clue how to start looking for the guy. Now, though, seeing the blood … he thought the look on his face was an exact mirror of his brother’s.

As Jesse watched him, Kevin looked out the window. His head dipped down a bit so he could look up at the sky.

He was a pretty pitiful sight, sitting there in an Incredible Hulk T-shirt and his Fruit of the Looms. A little kid, still, at least in that outfit. But Jesse knew that Kevin wasn’t a little kid anymore.

“Oh, shit, little brother, I’m sorry. I forgot to say ‘happy birthday.’ “

Kevin laughed. He slid his legs over one side of the bed, then bent and reached for his blue jeans.

“You supposed to be getting up?” Jesse asked with concern. “Your head—”

With a furious scowl, Kevin glared at Jesse. “Just shut up and listen a minute, will you?”

“Hey, what the fuck, Kev? I’m just trying to—”

“They flew. That’s what I’m telling you. Whatever the fuck Pete and Doug and those other two goons are, they aren’t normal. Not people. Not … I don’t know if they’re even human. They move wrong. Weird things happen when they’re around. Impossible things. And they can fly.”

Jesse raised his eyebrows. “Uh-huh.”

“Just listen,” Kevin snapped.

So Jesse listened with growing wonder and astonishment, not merely at the insane ramblings of his brother, but at the total conviction in Kevin’s voice. The kid believed it all, without the smallest doubt. And though all of the things that Kevin was saying were impossible, when he was done talking, it was that conviction that made Jesse pause, for just a moment, before allowing himself to remember that it was all bullshit.

“Gimme a fuckin’ break,” Jesse spat. “Come on, man. When Ma gets off the phone, I think you should go back to the—”

“Where are they, then?”

Jesse stared at Kevin.

“Where are they, Jesse? Pete doesn’t have a home. Not that place he told us he lived, and not anywhere else, either.
